Madison Community,
I would like to take a moment to share with you a couple of district procedures that were recently updated in the district’s board policy and administrative guidelines. The intent of sharing them now is so that you are able to make any necessary arrangements as you prepare for the 2024-25 school year.
The first change is a result of a significant increase in negative student meal account balances in recent years. Currently, due to the charging of student meals, the negative balance owed to the district food service department totals $59,000. Accordingly, the district is now authorized to turn over parents/guardians with negative balances of $50 or more to a collection agency, which could negatively impact the parent/guardian’s credit score. Please know that it is not the desire of the district to do so, however with the significant increase in funds owed to the food service department, the district finds
itself in a position where we must act accordingly. If one or more of your children has a negative meal balance, I encourage you to develop a plan with the food service department to eliminate your negative balance as quickly as possible. Additionally, the district is now authorized to turn over parents/guardians with other negative fee balances to a collection agency as well. If one or more of your children has a negative fee balance, I encourage you to develop a plan with the building your child is in to eliminate your negative fee balance as well.
The next change is a new policy with respect to positive lunch account balances for students who either graduate or withdraw from the district. The new policy calls for the district food service department to move the positive account balance to a sibling of the parent/guardian’s choice. If there is no sibling, the district food service department will return balances of more than $25 to the parent/guardian. Additionally, if there is no sibling, the district food service department will absorb balances of $25 or less.
The final change is in regards to the transportation of students, specifically in regards to each student’s pick-up and drop off locations (bus stops). The change was made to reduce the potential for and risk of dropping off a student at the wrong location on a particular day of the week or not picking up a student at a designated location on a particular day of the week. Each student will be picked up at one designated, consistent location and will be dropped off at one designated, consistent location. The pickup location can be different from the drop off location, however the pickup location must remain consistent, and the drop off location must remain consistent.
Thank you for your understanding in these matters, and have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Rob Peterson
Superintendent
Madison Local Schools

Madison South Elementary School ONLY will be closed Thursday, April 11th, 2024 due to a gas leak. All other Madison Schools will be in session as normal.

We are aware of the Odor Notice sent out by Columbia Gas of Ohio which has issued a statement that says “Columbia Gas crews are aware of a gas odor in the areas of Mansfield, Ashland, and Lexington. The situation is safe, and the source of the odor is known.” Although they have identified this odor source, we are monitoring levels at each building.
