Personal Enrichment Courses

Madison Adult Career Center offers a variety of short-term courses. Gain quick training in technical skills or take that course to learn something fun just for you!
 
Career Enhancement Courses offer quick skill introduction in areas often valued by employers like Basic Welding, Microsoft Word/Excel, Adobe Photoshop, English as a second language and child care certification, just to name a few. 
 
Personal Enrichment Courses, on topics like Essential Oils, Decluttering and how to fix your mower, are provided based on our community's interests. They can be fun and even give you some stress relief!

Basic Office Support Services (B.O.S.S.)
3/24/2020 - 6/17/2020 (4:30 - 8:30pm T,W,TH)
Prepare for entry-level employment in retail or service industries.  Introduces computer hardware/software; effective communication and customer service; financial transactions; basic business math; office equipment and safety. Prepares students for OPAC certification in Basic Word, Alpha Filing, Data Entry, Keyboarding, Petty Cash, Windows and CPR/First Aid.
 
This program is approved for WIOA Funding and the Ohio Adult Diploma program. (See program info./enrollment form to the right)
 
Cake Decorating Level II
4/13/2020 – 5/18/2020 (6:00 - 8:30pm, Mon) - 15 hours - $90.00
Moving beyond the basics, learn how to make/use royal icing using decorations, appliqués and flowers. Learn how to work with fondant and gum paste to make beautiful flowers, decorations, and cover cakes and sweet treats. You will also explore the creativity of painting on fondant and stacking cakes. The first night’s orientation will assist students with expectations, required items for class and additional cost (cake decorating kit is $40, Level 1 kit will also be needed for this class, payable to instructor). 
 
Heartsaver First Aid
4/14/2020 (5:30 - 8:30pm, Tues) - 3 hours - $50.00
This course teaches you how to manage illness and injuries within the first few minutes of their occurrence. Designed for professionals or anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in first aid to meet job, regulatory or other requirements. Book cost included.
 
QuickBooks 
4/14/2020 - 4/30/2020 (6:00 - 8:00pm, Tues, Thurs) - 12 hours - $127.00   
Using chart of accounts, create a company, security, working with lists for customers & vendors, banking, basic reports, invoicing, process payments, banking, create 1099’s. Course cost includes textbook. Prerequisites: familiarity with computers and windows. 
 
GD&T: Geometric, Dimensioning and Tolerancing
4/14/2020 – 4/28/2020 (6:00 - 8:00pm, Tues, Thurs) - 10 hours - $105.00
A beginning course on the use and the understanding of GD&T (geometric, dimensioning and tolerancing) symbols including their use, meaning and association on manufacturing prints. This course includes the terms used for the machining of production parts, the requirements for machining within tolerance specifications and the geometric specification per ASME Y14.5 Standard.
 
Basic Auto Maintenance
4/14/2020 - 4/28/2020 (6:00 - 9:00pm, Tues) - 9 hours - $63.00
Bring your own car and practice! Check/fill oil, transmission/brake/antifreeze and other fluids. Check tire pressure/size, oil, wipers and filters for your vehicle. Learn to find/replace tires, locate/change fuses and locate and understand the maintenance schedule for your vehicle.
 
Intermediate Conversational Spanish

Continue your knowledge of the Spanish culture by learning additional vocabulary, grammar and the spoken language.
 
Advanced Digital SLR Photography
4/14/2020 - 5/12/2020 (6:30 - 8:30pm, Tues) - 10 hours - $60.00
Prerequisite - Introduction to Digital SLR Photography or approval by instructor. This course will take up where Introduction to Digital SLR left off. Covers in greater depth correct exposure, shooting in manual mode, depth of field, sports photography, flash, and much more. There will be specific assignments relating to these topics. *Bring to class: digital SLR camera or SLR film camera. Textbook: “Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition” published by Bryan Peterson.

Learn how to use Google Apps, from beginner basics to advanced techniques, from email to document creation, calendars to music, Google products can be used for almost every aspect of life online.
 
Small Engine Repair
4/16/2020 – 5/28/2020 (6:00 - 9:00pm, Thurs) - 21 hours - $197.00 
This hands-on class covers two- and four-stroke theory and allows students to repair and maintain their own small engines. After the first couple classes, students can bring their own small engines to class (lawnmowers, weed trimmers, chainsaw, log splitter, etc.). Course cost includes textbook.*Bring to class a basic tool set – screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and hammers.
 
Landscape Painting
4/16/2020 – 5/14/2020 (6:00 - 8:30pm, Thurs) - 12.5 hours - $75.00
This class will teach the fundamentals of color, color mixing, painting technique, approach, creating the illusion of depth and exploring composition ideas. Students will paint 1-2 landscape paintings. *Additional fees for supplies will be paid directly to the instructor.
 
Gifts from the Kitchen
4/21/2020 – 5/26/2020 (6:00 - 8:30pm, Tues) - 15 hours - $90.00
A wonderful way to express your love-prepare and give carefully crafted and delicious food from your own kitchen! We will create sweet and savory recipes that are sure to please most palates. We will then package our edible gifts in creative and artful ways for memorable giving.
 
Child Abuse Prevention
4/22/2020 & 4/23/2020 (5:30 - 8:30pm, Weds, Thurs) - 6 hours - $42.00
This is an area of concern required for all child care employees.
 
Dental Radiography
4/24/2020 (8:00am - 3:00pm, Friday) - 7 hours - $105.00
Students considering this 7-hour course should currently be employed at a dental office and/or have dental assisting knowledge. After completion, students will need to complete full mouth X-rays at their office. Students can expect to receive their radiographer’s certificate within six weeks from the Ohio State Dental Board.
 
Dental Radiography CEU
4/24/2020 (11:00am - 1:00pm, Friday) - 2 hours - $60.00
We are now offering a 2-hour continuing education course for certified Dental Radiographers. This course is designed to give you the credits needed toward your bi-annual renewal. You must hold a current Dental Radiographers certificate to register.

Decluttering KonMari Method & Swedish Death Cleaning
5/5/2020 (6:00 - 7:30pm, Tues) - 1.5 hours - $15.00
There are a gazillion ways to declutter and organize. Get rid of your anxieties. The main focus of this is finding a way to “free yourself”, as well as making your home more relaxing and enjoyable. Both are extreme forms of decluttering and both require a lifestyle change. KonMari Method is about keeping only what sparks joy. Swedish Death Cleaning is about getting rid of things other people won’t want when you are gone and while they are grieving. The class will touch on reasons for decluttering, methods, and how to rid anxieties while doing it, and about “freeing oneself” from “stuff” and materialism.

Essential Oils for Dogs & Cats

This class will cover the use of essential oil blends to be Used on dogs and cats for issues such as anxiousness, Digestive support, cuts, bugs, itches, lumps etc. We will Discuss how much to dilute the oils, how to apply them, And which oils to avoid, especially for cats. At the end of the class you will have the opportunity to make recipes to take home with you. ($10 or less per item depending on the products made, payable to your instructor).

Bring your own mower to class! With an experienced instructor’s assistance, repair what’s ailing your mower, or bring your mower up to speed. A 3-night class to get your mower in shape! *Bring to class a basic tool set – screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and hammers.
